Regular -IR pattern (model: finir)

Remove -ir to find the stem, then add the ending: finir → fin- + ending

Plural forms add -iss- before -ons / -ez / -ent: fin + iss + ons → finissons.

  • je-isfinis
  • tu-isfinis
  • il / elle / on-itfinit
  • nous-issonsfinissons
  • vous-issezfinissez
  • ils / elles-issentfinissent

Pronunciation note: Je finis, tu finis, and il/elle finit often sound alike. The written endings are still different. In finissent, the -ent is not pronounced as a separate ending.

Je finis mes devoirs à huit heures.
I finish my homework at eight o’clock.

Not every verb ending in -ir follows this pattern (for example partir, dormir, ouvrir). This lesson focuses on the finir family: choisir, réussir, grandir, and others like them.
